Install
Four steps. Nothing asks for a password and nothing needs root.
- Install Ollama first, from ollama.com/download,
if you do not have it. This build does not bundle the engine yet; the app will tell you if
it is missing. Rumrunner runs its own supervised copy on port
11712, so a copy you already run on Ollama's default port is left alone. - Download the disk image in a browser — not with
curl, not withgh. Gatekeeper only checks files that carry the quarantine attribute, which the downloading app sets; a command-line download skips the check the build exists to pass. Public downloads are paused for the moment; write to hello@getrumrunner.com for the current image and its SHA-256, then hash the file you saved and compare before opening it. - Open the image, drag Rumrunner to Applications, open it. It lives in the menu bar — look for the hull. First run walks you through installing the background service and pulling the first model. The pull is a few GB and the progress bar is real: it is read from the daemon once a second.
- Point your editor at
http://127.0.0.1:11711/v1. No API key. The exact config for each editor is on the editors page.
What first run does
The wizard picks a model for your Mac's memory and says why in one sentence, writes that
choice to config.toml, asks before registering the background service — macOS will
ask again in its own words — and starts the pull. While the model downloads it shows the editor
config so the two overlap rather than run in sequence. The last step waits for your editor's
first request to arrive at the daemon, and ends when it has, not when you say you pasted the
config.
The service is a per-user launchd job labelled ai.rumrunner.rrd. Its
files live under ~/Library/Application Support/Rumrunner: config.toml
and rules.toml are hand-editable, and the app is a GUI over them.
Checking it from a terminal
The rr tool is on the disk image; copy it to ~/.local/bin.
rr status # engine, model, tier, uptime, version
rr chat # ask something and watch which lane answers
rr why # the last decisions, with their reasons in plain English
rr ledger # this month's receipt
rr status --report # a bundle safe to paste into a message: no prompts, no paths, no keys
If something breaks, hangs, misrenders or silently returns nothing, that is exactly what
this build is for — send rr status --report to
hello@getrumrunner.com.
Not yet
- No in-app updates. A new build is a new download.
- The engine is not bundled; Ollama is a prerequisite for now.
- Claude Code cannot connect on this build — it speaks the Anthropic dialect, and that route is not served yet.
